Hall of Fame Class of 2009

The Class of 2009 Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted during Alumni Weekend.

Seven Tiger alumni, from five sports, were honored on Saturday, Nov. 7, at E.M. Stevens Stadium during the Trinity football game with Centre College. The previous University President John R. Brazil, and Director of Athletics Bob King, presented certificates to the recipients and their representatives. An informal, open reception in the Bell Athletic Center was held after the game.

 

Brian Gottfried Brian Gottfried, an All-American men's tennis player at Trinity in 1971 and 1972, was the NCAA singles and doubles runner-up in 1972. A member of Trinity's 1972 NCAA Championship team, Mr. Gottfried went on to capture 51 Grand Prix doubles titles and 25 singles championships as a professional, including two French Open doubles championships and the Wimbledon doubles crown. A former Davis Cup player, Mr. Gottfried resides in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where he teaches top junior and professional players.
JoAnne Russell JoAnne Russell, a 1975 All-American in women's tennis, won the USTA Collegiate Doubles Championship, with Donna Stockton the same year. As a professional, Ms. Russell was ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles, and as high as No. 11 in singles, in 1977. She captured the 1977 Wimbledon doubles title. She served as a television commentator, including duties for NBC and ESPN. A resident of Calabasas, Calif., Ms. Russell is a teaching pro at the Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles.
Clyde Glosson

Clyde Glosson was a two-time NCAA track and field individual champion. Mr. Glosson won the NCAA Division II 100-yard dash in 1966, and the 200-meter dash in 1968. He earned five All-America honors and was an alternate for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Mr. Glosson also was a Tiger football standout for three seasons, as a split back. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1970, and played two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and one with the Detroit Wheels (USFL). Mr. Glosson, a retired educator from the San Antonio Independent School District, is a minister at Emmanuel African Methodist Church.

Mike Scott

Mike Scott '74 (B.S., home building) was a defensive back for Tiger football from 1970-1973. Mr. Scott is the Tigers all-time leader in career interceptions (22). Those 22 interceptions were ranked fifth all time in the NCAA, in 1973. He also is Trinity's single-season leader in interceptions (10), set in 1973. A versatile student-athlete, Mr. Scott was a member of Trinity's baseball team from 1971-1973, which advanced to the NCAA Division I playoffs. Mr. Scott is vice president of Austin Commercial, a construction management and general contracting company headquartered in Dallas.

Two brothers, Mickey and the late Rick Mahler, both Tiger baseball pitchers, were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mickey Mahler

Mickey Mahler is Trinity's all-time leader in victories (28), from 1971-1974. He was a member of Trinity's NCAA playoff teams in 1972 and 1973. Mr. Mahler went on to be a Major League pitcher for seven teams from 1977-1986: Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, California Angels, Montreal Expos, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. He was a teammate of his brother at Trinity and on the 1979 Braves. The Mahler duo pitched the same game in 1979, as Atlanta played the Houston Astros. Mr. Mahler, who attended San Antonio's Jay High School, resides in Sandy, Utah. He is a special projects advisor for iFreedomdirect, a mortgage company.

Rick Mahler

Rick Mahler, who died in 2005, was a member of Trinity's 1973 NCAA playoff team. He had a 13-year career as a Major League pitcher, from 1979-1991. Mr. Mahler pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds (1990 World Series team) and Montreal Expos. He amassed 96 Major League victories. Mr. Mahler was the Major League leader in starts, with Atlanta, in 1985 and 1986. He was the starting pitcher 39 times in each of those seasons, and made five opening-day starts. Mr. Mahler is represented by his son, Rick, a former baseball standout at the University of the Incarnate Word. He currently teaches special education at Lytle Elementary near San Antonio, and coaches baseball at Lytle High School.

Pete Murphy The late Pete Murphy '50 (B.S., physical education), and Master of Education '76, was a Trinity men's basketball player and coach. He coached the Tiger men from 1972-1986, and garnered 153 victories. Mr. Murphy remained Trinity's all-time winningest men's basketball coach, until the 2006-07 season. Mr. Murphy also served as Trinity's Director of Athletics. He was a basketball student-athlete from 1948-1950, and led the Tigers in scoring for two years. He was a three-time all-conference player, and won Trinity's Most Valuable Player Award. He died in 1986. Mr. Murphy is represented by his widow, Patsy, and son, Bobby '75. His three sons, Bobby, Danny '79, and Mark '90, were all Tiger basketball standouts.
