Seguin, Texas - The Trinity baseball team lost a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader, and the three-game series, to Texas Lutheran University on Saturday.
The Tigers came up short 8-7 in a 10-inning first-game battle, and the Bulldogs took the second game 5-1.
In the top half of the twin bill, the Bulldogs took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers got on the board with an unearned run in the third, but they were really able to get things going in the sixth inning with three-runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer to left field by Jake Martin.
The Tigers took a 5-3 lead by scoring a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but TLU was able to score a run on a Trinity error in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers were able to crack two RBI doubles in the ninth to lead 7-4.
Texas Lutheran tied the score at 7-7 in the ninth, by a single, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch situation. Trinity singled in the top of the 10th, but a double play ended the inning. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Texas Lutheran singled, and a Bulldog player scored on a fielder's choice to end the game.
TLU started game two with one run in bottom of the first inning. Martin evened the score by pounding his second home run of the day in the second inning. It would turn out be the Tigers' only scoring play of the matchup.
The Tigers sent a runner to third base in the sixth inning, but the bats were just not cracking. The Bulldogs added four more runs in the seventh. A Trinity player advanced to third in the ninth, but a fly ball to center field ended the doubleheader.
Trinity went 0-3 at Texas Lutheran and now stand at 10-11 overall and 2-4 in the SCAC. Trinity and Texas Lutheran will meet again for a single game on Tuesday, March 28, in Seguin.
Jake Martin hit two home runs on the day, bringing his total to three this season. Martin also scored two runs in the first game, and one in the second. He leads the team with 16 RBI in his column. Rafe Chaumette batted 3-5 in the opener, and Scott Walters went 2-4 in the second game.
James Nittoli was the starter of game one, and pitched for three innings. Matthew Thomas took over for two innings and permitted only one hit. Chris Tate then hurled for four innings and was charged with the lose. Tate struck out four batters and now stands at 1-2 on the season.
Kevin Flores started game two, and pitched for six innings. Flores suffered his first loss of the season and now stands at 5-1.
The Tigers will play at San Antonio's Our Lady of the Lake University on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
