Tiger Basketball Beaten by Whitworth Monday Night

Spokane, Wash. - The Whitworth Pirates beat the Trinity Tigers men 75-54 Monday night in a non-conference basketball game at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Trinity falls to 0-3 on the season, while Whitworth is now 2-0 in 2010-11.  The Tigers lost 77-69 to Linfield (Ore.) Sunday night.

Tiger first-year forward Zach Lambert of Frisco, Texas (Centennial), was the only Trinity player to score in double figures, with 12 points. Lambert shot 4-10 from the field and made 2-3 shots in the 3-point range. He also tied for the team lead with five rebounds.

Three Trinity players scored seven points each, including first-year forward Robert Kitzinger of Carmel, Ind (Carmel). Kitzinger also pulled in five rebounds, and dished out three asists. Sophomore forward Heath Hopson of Lampasas, Texas (Lampasas) and junior guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), also scored seven points.

Luke Caldarera, a senior forward from Houston (Katy Taylor), produced six points and four rebounds.

The first half was tightly played, as Trinity took an 18-15 lead (7:48) on a free throw by first-year guard Matt Feldman of Honolulu (Punahou). But the Pirates rallied and led 30-21 at the halftime intermission.

Trinity stayed in the hunt, as senior forward Sam Dworkin of Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), hit a 3-pointer at 18:07 in the second half. The Tigers pulled to 29-30 at that point in the game. Whitworth then pulled away for the rest of the contest, and led by as much as 23 points, 75-52 (1:38).

Whitworth was paced by Jack Loofburrow's 15 points, and 14 by Mike Taylor.

The Pirates shot 52 percent from the field, and the Tigers hit 36 percent. Whitworth held a slight 30-29 edge in rebounds. The Tigers committed 16 turnovers, to 11 for the Pirates.

The Tigers travel to Claremont, Calif., for two games next Friday and Saturday, at the David Wells Classic. Trinity plays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday, and at Pomona-Pitzer Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. Pacific (9:30 p.m. Central).
