#3 Trinity Men's Soccer Defeats Whitworth in NCAA Playoff Opener

San Antonio - The third-ranked Trinity men's soccer team opened the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship with a 3-0 shutout of Whitworth (WA) University Saturday night.


Brady Johnston put the Tigers on the board in the 35th minute, with an assist from Todd Edwards. Johnston headed the ball from the back post, on a corner kick.

The next scoring play would not occur until the 71st minute of action, when Ryan Hunter finished the goal from the left post. Kellen Reid and Daylon Gordon supplied the assist.

Todd Edwards put the icing on the cake with a goal in the 86th minute, with an assist from Chris Madden.



The Tigers improved their overall record to 20-1-0, and posted their 13th clean-sheet game of the season. It marked the fifth straight year Trinity won its opening match-up in the NCAA Postseason event. Whitworth completed its season with a 12-3-3 record.

Brady Johnston scored his second goal of the campaign, and the second game-winner.  His first goal came in Trinity's last outing - a double-overtime victory against Colorado College in the SCAC Tournament Championship.

Ryan Hunter posted his ninth goal of the season, and Todd Edwards scored his first. Kellen Reid accounted for a fifth assist this year.

Goalkeeper Todd Whittaker registered four saves to record his fifth shutout of the season, and improved his season total to 44 saves this year.



Trinity will host Chapman (CA) University in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs at 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The winner moves on to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
