Trinity Splits Road Doubleheader Against Hardin-Simmons

Abilene, Texas - The Tiger softball team earned a doubleheader split at Hardin-Simmons University on Friday afternoon, losing the opener 3-0, but bouncing back with a 1-0 win in the finale.

Trinity improved to 5-3 on the season with the game two victory.  The Tigers capitalized on an error in the top of the sixth for the only run of the game.

In game one, Hardin-Simmons scored three runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk, and a two-run single.

Sydney Friday (3-1) took her first loss of the season in the opener, giving up three runs on four hits, striking out three, and walking four.  After the first inning, Friday gave up just two hits and one walk, but the Tiger offense left nine runners on base in the game.

Trinity was held to just four hits in the game, but HSU pitchers issued six walks.  Caitlynn Dykes and Lauren Mercado picked up two walks each, and Dykes was one of four Tigers with a hit in the game.  Also with hits were Karen MacPherson, Becca Rush, and Chrissy Armstrong - all three went 1-3 in the game.

In game two, Mercado was the star for the Tigers, picking up her second win of the season with her first career shutout.  Mercado (2-2) struck out seven in the complete-game victory, giving up just four hits.  She also collected one of Trinity's five hits offensively - a one-out double in the fourth inning.

Rush drove in the eventual game-winner for the Tigers, while Dykes came home to score the game's lone run.  Dykes, MacPherson, and Armstrong all picked up another hit in game two, while Megan Russell also went 1-2 in the finale.

Trinity returns home tomorrow afternoon to take on East Texas Baptist in a doubleheader, starting at 12:00 p.m.
