Four Tiger Softball Players Named to SCAC All-Tournament Team
San Antonio - After finishing second at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the second straight season, Trinity's softball team had four players named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team.
Trinity went 2-2 at the 2012 SCAC Tournament, after winning the SCAC West Division, and earning a bye in the opening round of play. The Tigers defeated Millsaps College and Birmingham-Southern College to advance to the Championship, but then lost twice to Birmingham-Southern on the final day.
Senior Karen MacPherson, sophomore Chrissy Armstrong, and first-year players Caitlynn Dykes and Lauren Mercado were all selected to the All-Tournament Team.
MacPherson became the SCAC's first four-time member of the All-Tournament Team, hitting .438 (7-16) with three runs scored and seven stolen bases in the tournament. Armstrong recorded seven putouts and 10 assists for a fielding percentage of .944 over the four games.
Mercado hit .300 for the tournament, crushing two home runs and collecting five RBI in the first meeting with Birmingham-Southern, then drawing five walks and stealing a pair of bases on the final day of action.
Dykes, who recently became the first softball player in SCAC history to earn both Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors, leads Trinity with a .419 batting average this season, and collected three hits and two RBI in the tournament.
The Tigers are 28-14 this season, which is one win shy of tying the school record for victories. Trinity is also sixth in the latest West Region rankings, and are hoping for an at-large bid to the NCAA Playoffs.
