Softball Victorious to Open Tucson Invitational

Tucson, Arizona - Trinity's softball team opened up its part in the Tucson Invitational Games with wins over Eastern Connecticut State University and Augsburg (MN) College on Wednesday.

The Tigers took the opening game with a 7-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut, then finished the first of three days at the tournament with a 5-3 win over Augsburg.

Trinity took a 3-0 lead after three innings of game one, which turned out to be plenty as Tiger pitchers Katie Glomb and Katie Castillon combined to allow just one run on three hits in the contest.

Eastern Connecticut broke up the shutout with back-to-back doubles in the sixth, which were the first ECSU hits since the first batter of the game.

The Tigers piled on four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the scoring, picking up five of the team's nine total hits in that inning alone.

Both teams plated runs in the first inning of the second game of the day for Trinity, but the Tigers took a 4-1 lead after continuing to add runs in the second and third.

In the sixth, Trinity's final hit of the day eventually led to its final run to make it a 5-1 game at the time. Augsburg doubled home a pair of runs with two outs in the seventh, but the Tigers escaped with the win.

Trinity has won five consecutive games after Wednesday's sweep, improving its record to 7-11 this season. ECSU slipped to 1-5, while Augsburg fell to 8-4 on the year.

Katie Castillon (4-5) struck out seven batters over six innings of action in the opening game, allowing one run on three hits.

Rebecca Berreth paced Trinity's offensive efforts by going 2-3 with a double and three RBI in the win over ECSU.  Stephanie Crumrine was the only other Tiger player with more than one hit.

In game two, it was Katie Glomb's turn to lead the way from the circle, improving to 3-6 this season with a five-inning effort.  She allowed one run on four hits, and struck out five batters.

Berreth added two more hits to her day's total, including another double, and Danielle Ruiz was 2-2 with one run and one RBI.  Cameron Lavergne reached base three times, going 1-1 with two walks and a run scored in the game.

The Tigers will face off against Greenville (IL) College and Stevens (NJ) Institute of Technology on Thursday, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
