Tucson, Arizona - The Trinity softball team split its two matchups Thursday at the Tucson Invitational Games with a defeat over Greenville (IL) College and an extra innings lose to the Stevens (NJ) Institute of Technology.
The Tigers shut out Greenville 4-0 in the opener and won their sixth straight game.
Trinity put up two runs in the second inning of the first game on two RBI singles. An RBI triple by Rebecca Berreth in the fifth gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Adrienne Edwards reached on an error, which allowed Berreth to score as Trinity led 4-0.
In game two, Stevens edged Trinity 4-3 in eight innings as the Tigers win streak was snapped.
Stevens jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI double to center field. Trinity put up another run in the fifth on an RBI single and evened the score in the sixth. Devon Potter then spring home on a passed ball to even the score at three all.
In the top of the eighth, Stevens took the lead on a fielder's choice. Two Tiger players got on base in the bottom half of the stanza on a fielder's choice, but a pop-up to first base left the runners stranded to end the game.
Trinity now stands at 8-12 on the season.
Katie Castillon (5-5) picked up the victory in the opener. In her second shutout of the campaign, Castillon allowed six hits and fanned three batters. Stephanie Crumrine went 2-3 at the plate, and Rebecca Berreth smacked an RBI triple.
Katie Glomb (3-7) pitched the full eight innings in game two, and was the unfortunate loser of the tightly played matchup. Berreth hit 2-4 with an RBI and Cameron Lavergne also drove in a run. Danielle Ruiz, Devon Potter, and Mackenzie Hill crossed the plate for the Tigers.
Trinity wraps up its Arizona trip Friday with two games starting with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 9:00 a.m. MST. The Tigers then take on Central (IA) College at 11:00 a.m. MST.
