Tucson, Arizona - The Trinity softball team wrapped up the Tucson Invitational Games with a split on Friday, defeating the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse before coming up short against Central (IA) College.
The Tigers edged UW-Lac Crosse 2-1 to open the day, then Central escaped with a 5-4 victory in the Friday finale.
Trinity produced the opening run of the game with an RBI double in the top of the third, then scored again on a single in the fourth.
La Crosse scored on a squeeze play in the sixth, but could manage nothing else against Tiger pitcher Katie Castillon.
In the second game, Central took a 3-0 lead after four innings, but Trinity rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Dutch regained the lead with two more scores in the fifth, and the Tigers again in the sixth, but the final rally fell just short.
The Tigers sported a 4-2 record at the Tucson event, and stand at 9-13 on the season. Wisconsin-La Crosse dropped to 10-3, while Central improved to 11-1.
Katie Castillon pitched a complete game in the opener to improve to 6-5 on the season. She allowed just one run on three hits, and struck out a pair of hitters.
Trinity's offense had seven hits by seven different players in the game against UW-La Crosse, with Rebecca Berreth's RBI double being the only extra-base hit for the Tigers in game one.
Castillon also started game two, allowing three runs on three hits over three innings. Katie Glomb (3-8) was charged with the loss after pitching four innings of relief, yielding two runs on four hits.
The Tigers will open up a four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series with a Saturday doubleheader against Centenary (LA) College at 1:00 p.m.
