San Antonio - The Trinity softball team lost a hard-fought Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to Centenary (LA) College Sunday afternoon.
Centenary rallied to win the opening game 5-3, the finished the doubleheader by edging Trinity 3-2 in the second half of the twin bill.
The Ladies took the early advantage with a two-run homer in the first inning of game one, but the Tigers rallied with three runs in the second and third to take a 3-2 lead.
That slim advantage held until the fifth when Centenary scored on a Tiger error to tie the game. The Ladies then used a two-run triple in the sixth to back in front 5-3, leaving Trinity just six outs to try and catch up.
The Tigers squandered a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth, then left another runner on in the seventh to fall just short in the opener.
Game two remained scoreless until the top of the third when Centenary strung together a three-hit inning that gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Trinity was held without a run until the fifth, but finally broke through with a two-out hit to make it a 3-1 game.
After a leadoff line-out to start the bottom of the seventh, Trinity put runners on second and third with just one out. A sharp single to right scored one, but the Tiger rally fell just short when a strikeout and a groundout ended the game.
Trinity stands at 9-17 and 2-10 in the SCAC. Centenary also won Saturday's doubleheader, and now has an overall record of 10-12, and 7-1 in conference play.
Rebecca Berreth batted 2-4 with her team-leading 10th double in game two, as well as registering her team-beset 15th RBI.
The Tigers will host Our Lady of the Lake (TX) University in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 5, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
