Newburg, Oregon - Trinity's women's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season after dropping a 66-52 decision against Linfield College at the George Fox Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The game started off slowly for both teams, as neither one shot over 30% in the first half. Linfield held a slim 24-23 lead at the break, but then showed vast improvement in the final 20 minutes. Both teams shot better in the second half, but Linfield hit better than 50% of its shots, while the Tigers fell short of 40% in the final period.
Monica Holguin led Trinity with 16 points off the bench, hitting 4-11 from the field and 6-10 from the free throw line. She also knocked in a pair of three-point baskets, collected three rebounds, and dished out a team-best four assists.
Caitlin Barrett was the only Tiger starter in double figures, picking up 12 points on 5-12 shooting. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts this weekend. She added a pair of assists and three rebounds.
Anecia Richardson led the team with seven rebounds, but had four fouls in the game, and managed just 22 minutes of court time. Taylor Holllins added a solid nine points and six boards off the bench.
Trinity led much of the first half, but a 9-0 run by Linfield gave the Wildcats a 21-14 lead late in the period. Barrett's three at the end of the half cut the lead to just one. The Tigers continued to fight throughout the game, trimming a six-point lead down to one (43-42) with under 10 minutes to play. A 10-1 run gave Linfield just enough cushion to pull away in the end, though.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, November 22, at Hardin-Simmons University. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff. Trinity defeated HSU 84-62 in the second game of the season in 2013-14.
