San Antonio - The fifth-ranked Trinity volleyball team begins competition Friday at the NCAA Division III Regional in Georgetown, Texas, at Southwestern University.
The Tigers are competing in a Regional which features four of the top six teams in the nation. Trinity (27-7) opens at 12:30 p.m. Friday against Pacific Lutheran (WA) University (20-4), which received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Poll. The winner advances to Saturday's second round at 4:30 p.m. against either top-ranked Colorado College (31-1) or the College of New Rochelle (NY) (20-10).
Second-ranked Southwestern (29-5) takes on Whittier (CA) College (18-9). Sixth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges meets the University of Texas-Dallas (24-10), who also received votes in the poll, in the other first-round matchups.
The Regional final is scheduled for noon Sunday. The winner advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals to be held November 16 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Semifinals and Championship are scheduled for November 17-18 in the same location.
Led by 33rd-year Head Coach Julie Jenkins, the Tigers earned an at-large bid to the 64-team NCAA Tournament. Trinity was edged 3-2 by Colorado College in last weekend's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship in Kerrville, Texas. The Tigers beat Southwestern 3-2 in the conference Semifinals.
Trinity is competing in its 23rd NCAA postseason event. The Tigers have finished as NCAA runner-up, captured third place, advanced to the Elite Eight five times, and to the Sweet 16 on 12 occasions, all under Coach Jenkins. Last season, Trinity lost 3-1 to Hendrix (AR) College in the NCAA First Round at Richardson, Texas.
