Box Score San Antonio - Trinity hosted the first Annual Alamo City Opener at Olmos Basin Park on Friday morning, and a pair of Tiger standouts earned individual titles.
The women led off the day, and the Tigers did not disappoint. Waiting for no one, junior Vanessa Moreno took the lead at the outset of the three-lap course. Once there, she was able to hold off a challenge from Irma Garza of University of the Incarnate Word. Moreno cruised through the first mile in 6:10, and realizing that Garza was hanging off her shoulder, put in a strong surge en route to a 6:02 second mile. Garza was unable to respond and Moreno hit the finish of the 4,000m course in 15:09, 12 seconds clear of second place.
Sophomore Jessica Pagano and junior Jackie Newell made a statement during their first cross country meet of the season. They placed fourth and seventh respectively, and staked their claim as Trinity's second and third scorers, a huge step up from fifth and seventh the previous year. Other scorers for Trinity were sophomores Michelle Oberndorf and Nicola Hill, who finished in 10th and 16th. Trinity (35) came in second to Incarnate Word University (24).
On the men's side, Trinity battled the University of the Incarnate Word in a team duel. In the end, the Tigers beat their Division II rivals with a final score of 21 to Incarnate Word's 35. Taking the individual title for the Tigers was senior Sal Perdomo, who completed the 6,000m course in 19:58. He was closely followed by teammate Robert Edmonds, who arrived five seconds later in time of 20:03. Perdomo and Edmonds ran a smart race, taking the pace out comfortably with a 5:27 first mile, before dropping it down to 5:23 for the second mile.
Trinity placed four individuals in the top five spots. Rounding out the rest of the scoring squad were senior Fransisco Escobedo (20:15), junior Gerardo Hernandez (20:22), and first-year standout Taylor Piske (20:36).
The team will next travel to Houston, Texas on September 14th to compete at the Rice Invitational. The women will run their last 4,000m of the season at 6:15pm and the men will be running the 6,000m at 6:45pm.
