Box Score 2 San Antonio - The 16th-ranked Tiger baseball team finished off its opening weekend of the season with a pair of victories at home, defeating George Fox University 7-5 on Saturday afternoon, then finishing the night with an 11-1 win over Whittier College.
Trinity improved to 3-0 for the weekend, which inclludes the team's 9-7 win over the University of Texas-Tyler on Friday afternoon. The Tigers had to rally twice against George Fox in this afternoon's opener, erasing leads of 2-0, 4-3, and 5-4 on their way to victory. Against Whittier, Trinity took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third to break a 1-1 tie.
George Fox opened the day with by scoring a run in each of the first two innings to take the early lead, but a three-run home run off the bat of Austin Singer put Trinity in front 3-2 after the second. The Bruins quickly reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the third, but the Tigers tied things up in the bottom half.
A relentless George Fox team scored for the fourth straight inning in the top of the fourth, pulling back in front 5-4, but it would be the final run of the game for the Bruins. Tiger relievers Teddy Turner and Mike Walker pitched 5.2 scoreless innings to finish off the game, giving up four hits and striking out three batters. Walker (1-0) allowed just two hits over the final four innings to grab the victory.
Trinity tied the game in the fifth, then added runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull ahead for good. The final run came on another homer from Singer, who finished 2-4 with four RBI in the opening game.
Carter McEachern also drove in a pair of runs, while Drew Butler smacked two hits, and Colin Serkowski scored twice.
Game two opened with a Tiger run in the bottom of the first, and after Whittier tied things up in the second, Trinity's offense really came to life in the third and fourth. The scoring barrage started innocently enough with a two-run third, but it was a six-run fourth that really blew the game open.
Butler added four more RBI to his day, giving him nine in the first three games. Serkowski scored three more runs, picking up a hit to go with two walks. Brody Fehmel went 2-4 with two runs scored, while Jeremy Wolf also had a pair of hits.
Trinity played 19 different players - not including the three Tiger pitchers that came into the game. Gray actuallly came on for the second consecutive game, striking out the side in the ninth to finish off the win. Nick Griffith (1-0) earned the win, giving up one run on three hits, and striking out six over five innings of work. Matt Tindall pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits, and striking out a trio of Poets hitters.
Up next for the Tigers will be a three-game weekend away from home, as Trinity will face off against tough competition in East Texas. Trinity begins with a game at LeTourneau in Longview, Texas, on Friday night. The Tigers then face Louisiana College at Texas-Tyler on Saturday afternoon, followed by the weekend finale against Texas-Tyler on Sunday.
