San Antonio - Trinity's Spencer Steward and Mabel Fowler have been named the respective Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week, while Anthony Liva was tabbed as Men's Diver of the Week.
All turned in excellent performances last weekend in a dual meet with NCAA Division I University of the Incarnate Word (TX) at Barshop Natatorium. Liva earned Diver of the Week kudos for the third time this season, while Fowler and Steward were tabbed as Swimmers of the Week for the second occasion.
Fowler won the 1,650-yard freestyle and broke two school records in the process. The Tiger junior swam the 1,000-yard leg in 10:14.97 and completed the 1,650 in 17:10.11. Each time broke Trinity records that were set eight years ago.
Fowler earned an NCAA Division III provisional time in the 1,650. Her mark in the 1,000 is the best in the NCAA Division III, while the time in the 1,650 is ranked eighth nationally.
Steward was runner-up in two events. He touched the pad in the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.8 seconds and was second in the 150 breast in 1:31.49. The sophomore charged out to a time of 58.7 seconds in the 100.
Liva placed second on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. The Trinity junior's score on the 1-meter was 286.90, just off the NCAA qualifying mark. Liva earlier qualified for the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships to be held February 28-29 in Trinity's Hixon Natatorium.
The Tiger teams will compete in the SCAC Championships at San Antonio's Josh Davis Natatorium February 12-15. Trinity's women won the SCAC Championship last year for the 16th consecutive time, while the men were runners-up.
