San Antonio - The fourth-ranked Trinity baseball team opened its three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series with Austin (TX) College with a doubleheader sweep Friday night, winning 4-2 and 5-2.
Trinity started game one with two runs in the bottom of the first taking advantage of two walks to begin the inning. Mason Meredith and Michael Goodrich drove in the runs to put the Tigers on top 2-0.
Dalys Binder led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer that made it 3-0, and neither team scored again until the eighth.
Austin got a one-out triple that led to its first run of the game to make it 3-1, but Trinity got the run back after taking advantage of a leadoff walk, an error, and a wild pitch to push the lead back to 4-1.
A Tiger error in the ninth made it a 4-2 game with two runners on base, but Trinity escaped the inning with the win.
Austin answered with two runs in the top half of the third, stringing together a walk and a pair of hits that gave the visitors their first lead of the day at 2-1.
Trinity immediately tied the game as Jake Martin led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run.
After being retired in order in the fourth and fifth, the Tiger offense came back to life in the sixth. Mason Meredith led off the inning with a solo shot that gave Trinity a 3-2 lead.
Caraway followed Dalys Binder's triple with a run-scoring single to make it a 4-2 Tiger advantage, but a double play kept Trinity from an even bigger inning.
Trinity added an insurance run in the seventh as Meredith drove in Jake Martin with a sacrifice fly, and that would be the final score of the game.
The Tigers have won five games in a row to improved to 22-7 overall and 8-3 in the SCAC, while Austin dropped to 7-16 and 3-8 in conference.
Jake Martin picked up four hits in the doubleheader, including his team-leading sixth home run in game two. He went 3-4 with two runs scored in the Friday finale.
Mason Meredith's homer in the second game was his fifth of the season and he drove in three runs on the day to increase his team lead to 33 RBI on the year.
Dalys Binder posted his third homer of the season, which was one of just five hits in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Jeff Lonnecker (3-0) allowed just one earned run and struck out 10 batters over eight innings to claim the game one win.
Corey Cater (5-2) also went eight innings for the win, giving up two runs on just three hits and striking out a team season-high 11 batters.
Mark Tindall picked up a save in each game, striking out a pair of batters.
Trinity and Austin College conclude their series with a single game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
