Trinity Men's Soccer Opens SCAC Play With Win Over Schreiner

San Antonio – Trinity's men's soccer team began Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 5-0 win against Schreiner (TX) University on Friday night.

The Tigers opened the game with three goals in less than 10 minutes – all of which were scored by Philip Duenez in a span that covered just over nine minutes.

The first goal of the game came just 2:15 into the game on a diving header from Duenez, converting the sharp cross off the foot of Andrea Codispoti.

In the ninth minute, Quentin Van Der Lee lofted a pass from midfield down the left side of the Tiger attack that found the feet of Colton Wilbur. Wilbur then crossed it to the front of goal, where Duenez redirected it into the net.

The final goal came on a Schreiner turnover in their defensive half and Wesley Mitchell streaked his way behind the defense and into the box. Mitchell crossed it for another Duenez score in the 12th minute.

Trinity led 15-4 in overall shots in the first half, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Tigers didn't score again until the 66th minute as Thorsteinn Steinarsson passed into the box for Michael Somerville, who cut the ball back to the middle of the box. Jacob Hallenberger then buried the ball into the back of the net to make it a 4-0 lead.

Hallenberger then returned the favor with a chip shot pass to Somerville just over five minutes later, and Somerville headed the ball in for the final goal in the 71st minute.

Trinity won its fourth consecutive game to improve to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while Schreiner fell to 2-8-1 and 0-1-0 in SCAC. The Tigers are also now 22-0-1 against Schreiner during the SCAC era (since 1991).

The hat trick for Philip Duenez marked the first for a Tiger player since Austin Michaelis netted three goals against Texas Lutheran in 2017. Duenez came into the game with just one career goal and tonight was his first game-winning score.

Andrea Codispoti, Quentin Van Der Lee, and Thorsteinn Steinarsson picked up their first assists of the season, while Wesley Mitchell and Michael Somerville both nabbed their second of the year.

Colton Wilbur had his third assist in five games played, increasing his team lead.

Jacob Hallenberger produced his third goal and his second assist of the year, trailing only Codispoti and Duenez for the team lead in goals.

Michael Somerville also had his second goal of the season to close out the Tiger scoring.

Trinity will host the University of St. Thomas (TX) in continued SCAC action on Friday, October 11, at 8:00 p.m.
