San Antonio - Trinity's 14th-ranked men's tennis team salvaged a split of its Saturday matches, beating Division I University of the Incarnate Word (TX) 4-0 after a loss to Division II St. Mary's (TX) University earlier in the day.
In the second match of the day, played on UIW's courts, the Tigers defeated their Division I opponent 4-0. Playing by DI rules, the Tigers clinched the doubles point, and won three singles matches to claim victory over the Cardinals.
Matt Tyer and Wilson Lambeth won the #1 doubles match, while Jordan Pitts and Liam Crawley took the second line. Chas Mayer and Clayton Niess were leading the third doubles 5-4, but the match was halted as Trinity had clinched the dual-match point.
The first singles win for Trinity came at No. 4 singles, as Crawley won in straight sets. Lambeth gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead by winning #1 singles 7-5, 7-5. The clincher for the Tigers came at #2 singles, as Mayer won 6-3 in the third set.
The Tigers fell 7-2 to DII St. Mary's earlier in the day at the Butch Newman Tennis Center. Mayer and Niess won #3 doubles by a 9-7 battle, as the Tigers picked up their first point. Tyer and Lambeth were edged 8-6 in #1 doubles, while Crawley and Pitts lost the #2 line.
Trinity's singles victory came at the #1 match, with Lambeth winning 6-3, 1-6, 10-7. Fujitani came up just short at #5 singles, as St. Mary's won 6-7, 6-1, 12-10. Kevin Lee also had a hard-fought match at #6 singles, falling 6-2, 5-7, 13-11.
Trinity will compete next Friday through Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Tennis Indoor Championship at Cleveland, Ohio. First up on Friday will be an 8:00 a.m. ET match with second-ranked Emory (GA) University.
