Trinity Sweeps SCAC Softball Doubleheader From Southwestern

San Antonio - The Tiger softball team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign with a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers won the 9-1 run-rule five-inning first game, and took the second by a score of 6-3. Trinity has now won three straight games to improve to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC. The Pirates dropped to 7-7 and 0-2 SCAC. The series concludes Sunday with a DH starting at noon.

"I am just really proud of the girls all the way around," beamed Head Coach Brandi Crnkovic. "A lot of players got a chance to play in the first game, and even the girls I brought in, the subs, did really well, pinch-hitting and playing defense. Game two was really more exciting for me, being a closer game. When Emily Fleischman hit that home run, she kind of took the wind out of their sails. They were on a comeback, so that was big. The double play was awesome. Kaci Wellik pitched a really great game in the first game. I thought she was going to come out with a no-hitter, one out away from a no-hitter. In the second game, Katie Castillon did a good job starting off, and Delfina Morales came in and did well, getting the save."

Trinity pitcher Kaci Wellik (4-2) pitched all five innings in game one. Wellik was one out away from hurling a no-hitter, when Southwestern dropped a double that was landed just inside the foul line in shallow left field. The Pirates followed that with their only other hit of the game, which drove home a run.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the top half of the twin bill with two runs in the first inning, and the runs kept coming the rest of the way. A five-run third that featured five Trinity hits widened the lead. The game-winning RBI came in the fifth inning, on an RBI single to left field by Sabrina Nieto - the fourth hit of the inning.

In addition to her standout performance on the mound, Wellik also helped the offensive cause of the Tigers by batting 3-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Rebecca Berreth hit 2-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Nieto went 2-2 with two RBI.

The Tigers got on the board with three runs in the second inning of game two, then added another run in the third to go up 4-0.  Southwestern countered with two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Trinity lead in half. Then, the speedy Emily Fleischman electrified the crowd with an inside-the-park home run to right field in the bottom of the inning. The Pirates scored again in the fifth, but Trinity added an insurance run in the sixth to end the scoring. Trinity's defense was strong in the top of the seventh, as the Tigers executed their third double play of the season to end any chance of a rally.

Fleischman hit 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. On the day, Fleischman batted 4-6 with two RBI and three runs. Goldwait went 2-3 with an RBI and one run in game two, while Berreth and Siera Spurlock also collected two hits.

Katie Castillon (2-1) pitched for four innings and took home the victory. Castillon did not give up an earned run, and struck out three players. Delfina Morales hurled the final three innings and was awarded her first save of the season.
