#17 Trinity Finishes Home Tournament Undefeated

San Antonio - The 17th-ranked Tiger volleyball team completed the Trinity National Invitational with victories over the University of Minnesota-Morris and 25th-ranked College of Saint Benedict (MN) on Saturday.


The Tigers started the day with a 25-14, 26-24, 25-23 decision over Minnesota-Morris, then won 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21 to hand Saint Benedict its first loss of the weekend.

Trinity was on fire in the first set with Minnesota-Morris, hitting .423 overall and scoring seven straight points late in the set to pull away for good.

Despite the Tigers hitting .419 in the second, the Cougars kept it close throughout. After being down 12-16, the Tigers rallied to tie the score at 19-19. The Cougars later tied the score at 23-23 and at 24-24 to extend the set, but Trinity notched the next two points to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set was close once again with Trinity scoring five straight points to erase a 15-20 deficit and tie things up. Minnesota-Morris took leads of 22-21 and 23-22, but the Tigers rattled off the next three points to finish off the sweep. 

The Tigers had a rought start with a 7-1 deficit against Saint Benedict, but Trinity made a run of its own to take a 12-11 lead. Either team was in position to win the opener, but Trinity scored the final two points to take the early advantage.

Trinity hit .400 in the second set and jumped out to a 16-8 lead. Saint Benedict came no closer than four points after that mark and the Tigers quickly led 2-0.

The third set had Trinity leading 17-14 when the Bennies scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 22-19 lead. The Tigers closed to 22-23, but Saint Benedict finished off the stanza to avoid the sweep.

St. Benedict also led 14-12 in the fourth when Trinity won four consecutive points to lead 16-14. The Bennies pulled to 17-18, but the Tigers closed with a 7-4 run to claim the set and match.



Trinity went undefeated at 4-0 over the two-day tournament. In addition to beating Minnesota-Morris and Saint Benedict, the Tigers also bested 15th-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) and Neumann (PA) University.

Avery Tuggle posted 15 kills and 10 digs against Saint Benedict, and hit .375 in the match. Tuggle had nine kills and three service aces in the opener with Minnesota-Morris. She was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player for her effort over the weekend.

Lexie Acevedo turned in impressive performances in both matches, with 20 assists against Saint Benedict and 15 against Minnesota-Morris to earn herself All-Tournament honors.

Sami Lin was Trinity's final All-Tournament selection, scoring five aces and a team-leading 17 digs against Saint Benedict, as well as a team-leading 17 digs. Lin also led Trinity in the opening match with 10 digs.

Annie Rose Leggett hit .353 against Minnesota-Morris, firing in eight kills. Leggett posted a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs against Saint Benedict.

Katrina Lieberman was responsible for 30 assists against Saint Benedict and 17 in the match with Minnesota-Morris. Lieberman has already racked up 67 assists this season and has 2,361 in her career.

Sarah Williammee hit .400 against the Bennies, to go with 12 kills.  



Trinity heads to Richardson, Texas, September 6-7 for the University of Texas-Dallas Invitational.
