#9 Trinity Finishes SCAC Weekend Sweep on Saturday

Denver, Colorado – Trinity's ninth-ranked volleyball team finished off its first weekend of action in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with victories over Austin (TX) College and Johnson & Wales (CO) University.



The Tigers began the day with a 3-2 (25-27, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 15-10) win over Austin College, taking each of the final two sets to nab the win. Trinity finished off the tournament by sweeping Johnson & Wales 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-17).

Neither team led by more than three points until late in the first set when Texas Lutheran turned an 18-19 deficit into a 23-19 lead with five straight points. After the teams traded points, Trinity scored four straight points to tie things up 24-24. The Tigers tied it again 25-25 before the Bulldogs got the final two points to grab the early 1-0 lead.

Trinity started the second set with a 10-4 run, but Texas Lutheran had climbed back to 15-13 just a few plays later. The Tigers then scored five of the next six to take a 20-14 advantage, then held off a late Bulldogs rally to tie things up 1-1.

Texas Lutheran controlled the third set most of the way, though Trinity surged to within a point late in the action. The Bulldogs traded points down the stretch to go back in front in the match.

Trinity never trailed in the fourth, scoring seven of the final nine points to close things out and force a fifth set. The Tigers then scored the first four points of the final set and never looked back to grab the win.

Against Johnson & Wales, Trinity opened up with an 8-3 lead and never allowed the home team to get closer than four points the rest of the way. The Tigers rattled off the final six points of the opening set to close out the win.

Trinity scored five of the first six points in the second set, but the Wildcats rallied to take a brief 11-10 lead. The set was tied 15-15 a few points later when the Tigers went on an 8-1 run to take control for a 2-0 lead.

Trailing 11-12 in the third, Trinity scored seven of the next nine points to pull in front for good. Johnson & Wales closed to 18-15, but the Tigers against put together a 7-2 run to finish off the sweep.



Trinity improves to 11-3 overall and remains undefeated with a 3-0 SCAC record. Texas Lutheran fell to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in SCAC play, while Johnson & Wales is now 2-9 and 0-3 SCAC.

Avery Tuggle led the Tigers with double-doubles in both victories on Saturday, beginning with a team-high 17 kills to go with 13 digs against Texas Lutheran. She finished by putting up 16 kills and 12 digs to lead the team in both categories.

Annie Rose Leggett finished with a team-high 17 digs to go with nine kills and two aces against TLU, then had nine more kills and 11 more digs in the win over JWU.

Katrina Lieberman led the team with 31 assists against the Bulldogs, then Marisa Amarino led the way with 17 assists in the finale against the Wildcats.

Lexie Acevedo joined Tuggle with a double-double against Texas Lutheran, scoring 26 assists and 13 digs. She finished her day with 13 more assists against Johnson & Wales.

Emma Funk led the team with seven blocks to go with 13 kills against the Bulldogs, while Sami Lin posted 16 digs in the match.

Nadia Kern finished with three aces to pace the Tigers against the Wildcats.

Sarah Williammee scored six blocks in the win over Texas Lutheran and finished her day with 20 total kills overall.



The Tigers will continue SCAC play by hosting Schreiner (TX) University on Thursday, September 26, at 6:00 p.m.
