Trinity Volleyball Opens NCAA Championship in Virginia

San Antonio - The seventh-ranked Trinity volleyball team begins its quest for an NCAA Division III Championship Friday in a first-round match at Christopher Newport (VA) University in Newport News, Virginia.

Led by 35th-year Head Coach Julie Jenkins, Trinity (33-4) takes on Hunter (NY) College (15-17) at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time Friday in the first round of the eight-team Regional. The winner plays at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of #22 Juniata (PA) College (22-8) and Virginia Wesleyan University (28-7).

The third round is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, and the winner advances to the Quarterfinals November 21 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Semifinals and Finals will be played November 22-23.

In other first-round matchups, Randolph-Macon (VA) College plays Marymount (Va) University, and host Christopher Newport meets Stevenson (MD) University. Christopher Newport and Stevenson each received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll.

Trinity earned an automatic bid to this year's tournament by capturing the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship last weekend in Seguin, Texas. The Tigers defeated eighth-ranked Colorado College 3-1 to gain their 19th overall SCAC title.

The Tigers are competing in their 25th NCAA postseason event. Trinity has finished as NCAA runner-up, captured third place, advanced to the Elite Eight five times, and made it to the Sweet 16 on 12 occasions. Last season, Trinity was upset by Aurora (IL) University in the opening round in Chicago, Illinois.
