Heights, Ohio - The top-ranked Juniata College Eagles beat the No.
18 Trinity University Tigers 25-16, 27-25, 25-23 Thursday in the
NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship quarterfinals at
John Carroll University.
Trinity, playing in its fifth NCAA quarterfinal match (the last
was in 2006), completed the season with a 30-12 record. But, the
Tigers, competing in their 18th straight NCAA postseason
tournament, had a grand run to the quarterfinals. At last weekend's
South Region Tournament at Georgetown, Texas, the fifth-seeded
Tigers knocked off No. 4 Randolph-Macon, national champion and top
seed Emory, and the hosts, No. 2 Southwestern.
Head coach Julie Jenkins, in her 25th year at the Tigers
helm, recorded her 700th career victory with the win over
Randolph-Macon.
Senior All-America middle blocker Aly Hazelwood of Baytown, Texas (Barbers Hill), hit
.360 against Juniata, with 11 kills, two errors and 25 total
attacks. Hazelwood also had one of Trinity's four blocks in the
match. She is ranked third in single-season Trinity history with
166 blocks. Hazelwood earlier became the second player in Tiger
history to record 500 or more blocks in a career.
Junior setter Caiti Troyer of Atlanta (Wesleyan), finished the match
with 31 assists. Troyer completed the campaign with 1,527 assists,
the second-most in Trinity history,
Alexis Edwards, a junior libero from Lincoln,
Neb. (Pius X), registered 11 digs. Senior outside hitter Amy Mittelstaedt of Phoenix (Xavier College
Prep), had seven digs and two aces. Mittelstaedt had been named the
South Region Tournament Most Valuable Player. Junior defensive
specialist Emily Hilliard of Corpus Christi, Texas (King), was
the aces leader, with three.
Senior middle blocker Ginger Haley of Arlington, Texas (Temple Christian),
hit .500, with eight kills, no errors and 16 total attacks. She led
the Tigers in blocks, with two. First-year outside hitter Madison McMahon of Austin, Texas (St. Michael's
Academy), hit .438, chalking up eight kills, one error and 16 total
attacks.
