University Tigers and the University of the Incarnate Word
Cardinals played to a double-overtime 0-0 tie Monday night in the
inaugural Gordon Hartman Cup at the Tigers' field.
Trinity, ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division III, now stands at
7-1-1. Incarnate Word, ranked No. 16 in Division II, has a record
of 3-2-3.
The Cardinals held a 15-14 lead in shots, and a 7-2 advantage in
shots on goal. Trinity led 8-3 in corner kicks.
Tiger senior goalkeeper Patrick Johnson registered seven saves.
Cardinals senior goalkeeper Ryan Eschenburg accounted for two
saves.
After the official game ended, the two teams lined up for
penalty kicks, to determine the winner of the Hartman Cup. UIW won
the PKs 4-2, clinched by sophomore forward Carlos Gonzalez.
Gordon Hartman, a San Antonio philanthropist, presented the
trophy to the Cardinals following the game.
The Tigers resume their SCAC campaign Friday, Oct. 9, at
Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. Trinity travels to Jackson,
Miss., Oct. 11 for a conference game with Millsaps. The Tigers,
defending conference champions, return home to host Centre in an
SCAC matchup Friday, Oct. 16. Trinity has a 2-0-0 record this
season.
