Jackson, Miss. - The Millsaps College Majors
held the Trinity University Tigers men to as scoring season-low
with a 47-39 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory
Saturday at The Hangar Dome.
Trinity (5-8, 2-3 SCAC) had a two-game win streak snapped by the
loss. Millsaps improved to 5-7 and 2-3 SCAC, for its third straight
win.
The Tigers led 21-18 at halftime of the low-scoring contest,
shooting 43 percent to the Majors' 27 percent. Trinity scored only
five field goals in the second half, and Millsaps had nine. The
Tigers led 23-22 at 17:18 in the second half, and the Majors took
over for good. Millsaps went to a 33-24 lead at 9:14, until the
Tigers closed to five points (30-35, 4:36). The Majors opened up a
lead by as much as 13 points (45-32, 45 seconds remaining), until
Tiger senior guard Michael Tobolowsky closed the gap to nine
(36-45, 27 seconds left), with a free throw and a 3-pointer.
Tobolowsky, from Dallas (Greenhill School), paced the Tigers
with 13 points. He shot 4-13 from the field, 3-9 in 3-point range,
and picked up five rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor) added 12
points, and a team-best eight rebounds. Senior post Peter Garatoni
of San Antonio (MacArthur) scored nine points, and accounted for
seven rebounds. Senior guard Bart Taylor of San Antonio (St. Mary's
Hall) dished out four assists and two points.
Cameron Varnado of Millsaps led the game with 15 points, and
Blake Martinez added 12.
Trinity shot 27 percent from the field, to 33 percent for
Millsaps. The Majors edged the Tigers 39-38 in rebounding.
The two teams will meet again Feb. 7 in Sams Gym, the Tigers'
final regular-season home game.
Trinity, which beat Hendrix 61-54 last Friday in Conway, Ark.,
will host Oglethorpe in a SCAC game at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.
