Sherman, Texas - The Austin College Kangaroos
snapped the Trinity Tigers men's basketball team's four-game
winning streak with a 71-60 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
victory Friday night at Hughey Gymnasium.
Trinity stands in fourth place in the SCAC West Division, with a
7-7 conference mark. Four teams from each of two divisions qualify
for the SCAC Tournament Feb. 26-28 at Millsaps College in Jackson,
Miss. Trinity, 10-12 overall, is 1 ½ games ahead of
fifth-place Millsaps.
The Tigers have two conference games remaining, including a
Saturday night tilt with Colorado College in Colorado Springs,
Colo. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. Mountain Time. Austin College, which
beat Trinity 69-59 on Jan. 2 in San Antonio, is in first place in
the division with a 10-3 mark (17-5 overall).
Tiger sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos
Pueblos), led the team with 12 points, shooting 4-6 from the field
and 4-4 from the free throw line. Beall was the game's leader in
assists, with five, and tied for the Tigers' rebounding lead, also
with five. Sophomore forward Gil Melchior of Luxembourg also
produced five rebounds, while scoring three points.
Junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor), added 11
points and three steals. Caldarera, who shot 5-9 from the field, is
now just three points from reaching 900 in his career.
The Kangaroos held a 40-35 advantage at halftime. Austin College
led by as much as 21 points, 65-44, with 7:40 left in the game.
Trinity senior forward Bryant Wilson of Dallas (Jesuit College
Prep) started the comeback with a layup at 7:29. The Tigers
outscored the 'Roos 17-3, and closed to within seven points
(61-68, 48 seconds), on a jumper by junior forward Sam Dworkin of
Portland, Ore. (Lincoln). Austin College closed out the game with a
steal and layup.
Austin College's Kola Alade led the game with 15 points.
Trinity shot 39 percent from the field, and Austin College hit
46 percent. The Kangaroos led 40-34 in rebounding.
