Georgetown, Texas - The Trinity Tigers men
finished their regular-season SCAC campaign with a 58-49 win over
the Southwestern Pirates Friday night.
Trinity improved to 12-12 and 9-7 SCAC, and is tied with
Southwestern (16-9, 9-7 SCAC) for second place in the conference
West Division. The Tigers earlier qualified for the eight-team SCAC
Tournament Feb. 26-28 at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Trinity has one
more game to go in the regular season, a 6 p.m. non-conference tilt
Saturday in Irving, Texas, with the University of Dallas.
Tiger junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor),
registered a double-double, with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Caldarera, who previously went over the 900 career points mark,
shot 6-18 from the field, and sank 8-10 free throws.
Senior forward Bryant Wilson of Dallas (Jesuit College Prep),
contributed 18 points on 4-7 shooting, all from beyond the arc.
Wilson also sank 6-6 free throws.
Peter Garatoni, a senior post from San Antonio (MacArthur), had
10 rebounds in the game. Sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa
Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), dished out five assists.
Southwestern, which beat Trinity 78-56 on Dec. 3 in San Antonio,
was paced by Travis Barber and Jonathan Brown, with 15 points each.
Trinity held a 29-26 halftime lead. The Pirates, down by as much
as seven points in the second half, pulled to within three 33-36,
at the 9:34 mark. Two free throws by Caldarera started a 22-16
scoring advantage by the Tigers. Southwestern did close to four
points (39-43, 5:33), but a layup by Garatoni widened the lead to
keep Trinity in control.
Each team shot 30 percent from the field, but Trinity hit 37
percent from 3-point range, to 19 percent by Southwestern. The
Tigers led 43-39 in rebounding.
