Jackson, Miss. - The Trinity Tigers men's
basketball team swept the season series with the Millsaps Majors by
a 53-45 SCAC victory Friday night at The Hangar Dome.
Trinity (10-10, 7-5 SCAC) beat the Majors 69-55 last Jan. 7 in
San Antonio. The Tigers are now in sole possession of second place
in the SCAC West Division. Millsaps dropped to 8-12 and 3-9 after
the loss.
Tiger senior forward Luke Caldarera (Houston/Katy Taylor) was
the game's high scorer, with 19 points. Caldarera shot 8-13 from
the field, went 2-2 beyond the arc, and blocked two shots.
First-year forwards Jonathan Wilt (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and
Robert Kitzinger (Carmel, Ind.) each scored seven points.
Matt Feldman (Honolulu/Punahou) had five rebounds, along with
six points. Clarke Allan (Austin, Texas/Westlake) also grabbed five
rebounds, while scoring three points. Ryan Beall (Santa Barbara,
Calif./Dos Pueblos) was the game's assists leader, with three.
Beall chipped in five points for the Tigers.
Brian Merkel paced Millsaps with 13 points, and Nick Cortese
added 12.
Trinity led 31-25 at halftime, then pulled out to a 43-31
second-half lead on a three-pointer by Wilt. The Majors closed to
within six points (43-49) with 1:41 to play, but Caldarera made a
key rebound that was followed by Feldman getting fouled. He
sank both shots from the charity stripe for a 51-43 lead with less
than a minute left, and the Tigers held on for the win.
In the second half of play, the Tigers shot 41 percent, and the
Majors could manage only 26 percent. Trinity shot 46.3
percent (19-41) for the game, and Millsaps hit 32 percent (16-50)
of its shots. The Tigers outscored the Majors 21-10 in points off
turnovers. In rebounding, Trinity held a 32-29 advantage.
The Tigers continue their SCAC road trip Saturday in Conway,
Ark., by taking on Hendrix at 8 p.m.
