Tiger Football Opens SCAC Action With Victory Over Rhodes

Box Score

Memphis, Tennessee - The Trinity Tigers opened their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign in style with a 62-7 victory over the Rhodes Lynx at Fargason Field on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity, undefeated at 3-0 (1-0 SCAC), scored 60 or more points in a game for the first time since the 2002 season. That year, the Tigers advanced to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the NCAA Division III Championship game. The 2011 Tigers also tied a school record for the eighth-largest margin of victory (55 points), and for the ninth-most points in a game.

The Tigers have not started the season with a 3-0 record since 2009. Last season, Rhodes came to town and beat Trinity 22-16 on Sept. 18. The Tigers now lead the series 17-12-0.

Junior quarterback Nyk McKissic (Pflugerville, Texas/Stony Point) set the tone of the game by completing 10-17 passes (no interceptions) for 135 yards and three touchdowns. McKissic's first TD pass opened the scoring as he connected on a 26-yarder to junior wide receiver Riley Walker (Austin, Texas/Bowie) with 10 minutes left in the first period. A 30-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Hagen Kattner (Hutto, Texas/Connally) gave Trinity a 34-0 lead with 38 seconds remaining in the first half. Kattner led all Trinity receivers with four catches for 56 yards, and Walker had two receptions for 45 yards.

Garrett Biel, a junior kicker (Clayton, Calif./DeLaSalles), booted two field goals of 28 and 37 yards in the first half. Sophomore running back Desmond King (Pearland, Texas/Pearland) scored two first-half rushing touchdowns, of 65 and 10 yards. King chalked up 100 yards on seven carries.

McKissic opened the second half with a 7-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Mason Lytal of Houston (Memorial).

First-year quarterback Mason Blaschke (Cuero, Texas/Cuero) rushed for two third-quarter touchdowns, just one minute apart. Blaschke scored on runs of 32 and 33 yards. Early in the fourth quarter, Blaschke hit junior running back William Hix (Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal) with an 8-yard TD pass. Blaschke had 78 yards rushing on four attempts, and completed 5-8 passes for 44 yards. Junior running back Patrick Granchelli (McAllen, Texas/Memorial) picked up 94 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

The lone scoring play for Rhodes (0-2, 0-1 SCAC) came with 6:25 remaining in the game, as Jack Lartigue caught a 20-yard pass from Brett Stoots.

Trinity put up 524 yards of total offense (345 rushing and 179 passing).

The Tiger defense limited the Lynx to 205 yards (60 on the ground, and 145 in the air). Rhodes quarterbacks were intercepted three times, and were sacked once. Credited with the interceptions were senior linebacker Ben Robinson (Coppell, Texas/Coppell), first-year defensive back Jai Boatman (San Antonio/Alamo Heights), and senior defensive back Tyler Barrett of Spring, Texas (Oak Ridge). Robinson returned the interception 62 yards, and also chalked up five tackles (four solo).

First-year linebacker Ernest Alumanah (Houston/Alief Hastings) led the Tigers with eight tackles (two solo), and 1.5 for a loss. Junior linebacker Michael Schwartz (Houston/J. Frank Dobie) amassed seven tackles (two solo). Glenn Etienne (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Springs) accounted for five tackles in the game.

Trinity continues its SCAC schedule next Saturday at Jackson, Miss., in a 1 p.m. game with the Millsaps Majors.
