Box Score Birmingham, Alabama - The Tiger football
team upset 16th-ranked Birmingham-Southern College with a 30-21
road win on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity improved to 4-2 this season with the victory, which is
the sixth straight win in the series over the Panthers. Each
of the last two meetings have been decided by less than 10
points.
Mason Blaschke sealed the win for the Tigers, accounting for his
third touchdown of the day with a one-yard scoring plunge with just
over three minutes left in the game. Blaschke had two
touchdowns and 53 yards rushing on the day, also completing 7-10
passes and throwing for another score.
Both teams were scoreless in the opening quarter, then Blasckhe
hit Matthew Kennemer for a 43-yard touchdown to put Trinity up 7-0.
Blaschke added his first rushing touchdown a few minutes
later, making it 14-0 with just 85 seconds left in the half.
Birmingham-Southern managed to get on the board before
halftime though, scoring with three seconds left.
After Garrett Biel booted a 43-yard field goal to open the third
quarter scoring, BSC made it 17-14 with an 11-play drive that
covered 65 yards. Trinity then got a fourth-quarter score on
a 14-play drive, but the extra point was missed to keep it
23-14.
After Birmingham answered with its own touchdown in the final
quarter, it was just a two-point game heading into the final
six-plus minutes.
On the final scoring drive, it was actually Trinity's Travis
Williams who had the key play, taking off for a 62-yard run that
set up first-and-goal at the one yard line. Blaschke then
finished off the drive with his final score.
The Tiger defense forced four fumbles in the game, which led to
10 Trinity points. The final fumble came in the final
minutes, spoiling any comeback attempt by Birmingham.
Williams finished with his first career 100-yard game, rushing
for 101 yards on 12 carries. Patrick Granchelli also added 59
yards on 12 rushes, and the Tiger team piled up 220 yards rushing
on 44 carries - averaging 5.0 yards/rush.
Kennemer led Trinity with three catches for 62 total yards and a
score, while Mason Lytal picked up his seventh touchdown reception
of the season. Lytal had two receptions for 20 yards and the
score.
Defensively, Jai Boatman led the Tigers with 11 total tackles -
including eight solo efforts. Tomy Boboy also had seven solo
tackles in the game, as well as his 13th tackle for loss this
season. Boboy picked up another sack in the game as well,
upping his total to 8.5 on the year.
Trinity will be back on the road next weekend, taking on another
former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent in Centre
College. The Tigers and Colonels kick off at 1:30 p.m. in
Danville, Kentucky.
