Box Score San Antonio - The Tiger men's soccer team
finished off its regular season Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference schedule with a 2-2 double-overtime tie against
Southwestern University.
Trinity fell to 15-0-3 this season and 8-0-2 in conference play.
The Tigers have already clinched the top seed in next
weekend's SCAC Tournament, which will be hosted by Trinity November
2-4.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first half, after Jeff Hayes
and Jonny Lawson scored a pair of goals just 72 seconds apart.
Hayes scored on a header from Yuri Ribeiro's free kick
outside the box for the opening goal. Lawson's goal was a
great individual effort, as he fought for a loose ball in the box,
and was able to find the back of the net.
Southwestern came to life shortly after the second Trinity goal,
though, cutting into the lead to make it 2-1 less than three
minutes later. The score remained that way until
halftime.
Despite 16 shots in the second half, Trinity was unable to pull
ahead, and Southwestern knocked in the tying goal with 2:43
remaining in regulation. The Tigers had a couple of shots
after the game was tied, but couldn't convert.
Southwestern carried the momentum into overtime, pulling off
four shots in the first 5:24 of the extra period. Trinity
goalkeeper Matt Cardone made three of his six total saves in that
stretch to avoid the loss. The second half of overtime was a
different story, as the Tigers took control of the game. In a
span of 55 seconds, Trinity had shots hit both the cross bar and
the post - narrowly missing the victory.
Then, with under a minute to play, Trinity was awarded a penalty
kick that could have also ended the game. Southwestern's
Daniel Poole made the save, though, and joined Cardone with three
saves in the first overtime. The Pirates also had a team save
with 30 seconds to play, clearing a ball off the line from Michael
Micheletti's header.
Both goalkeepers also made saves in the second overtime, but
Trinity controlled most of the action with four shots. For
the entire game, Trinity out-shot Southwestern 36-14.
Trinity returns to action on Friday night, closing out its
regular season schedule against UC-Santa Cruz at 8:00 p.m.
