Trinity Men's Soccer Defeats UC-Santa Cruz on Friday

Box Score

San Antonio - The Tiger men's soccer team earned a 5-0 victory over the University of California-Santa Cruz to finish off the regular season schedule on Friday night.

Trinity improved to 16-0-3 with its 11th shutout of the year, sparked by four goals in the second half of play.  The Tigers held a 9-4 edge in shots for the first half, scoring just one goal.  In the second, Trinity out-shot UC-Santa Cruz 19-0 to earn the victory.

Yuri Ribeiro nailed his team-leading 14th goal for the eventual game-winner in the eighth minute of the game.  It marked the third game-winning goal of the season for the All-American.

Victor Araujo had a hand in each of the first three goals of the second half for Trinity, as the Tigers took command of the game.  Araujo and Ribeiro both assisted on the first score, which was a rebound goal for MJ Kawamoto.  In a span of less than eight minutes, Araujo added a goal of his own, and an assist on the next goal - scored by Aaron Olson.

Alan Castillejos capped the scoring for the Tigers, netting a goal in the 76th minute on an assist by Jonny Lawson.

Matt Cardone, Tim Nelin, and Chad Margotta combined for the shutout in Friday's game.  Cardone made one save, while Kawamoto actually made the other as he cleared a ball of the line for the Tigers.

Trinity received a bye for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins next weekend.  The Tigers, who will serve as hosts for the tournament, will play on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., against either Dallas or Austin College.
