Box Score Alpine, Texas - The Tiger football team
suffered a 62-35 defeat at the hands of Sul Ross State University
on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity fell to 2-1 with the loss, which marks the fourth
straight loss to Sul Ross - dating back to the 1980 season.
The loss also breaks a regular season winning streak of 13
games for the Tigers, dating back to the end of the 2010
season.
The two Texas teams started off quickly with a pair of
touchdowns on their opening drives. After Trinity forced a
three-and-out on the next Sul Ross possession, the offense used a
12-play, 81-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead early in the second
quarter.
That's when the Sul Ross offense really came to life, scoring 24
points in the quarter to take a 31-21 hafltime lead. After
the Lobos tied the game 14-14 early in the period, Trinity answered
with a score on its third straight possession to regain the lead.
Sul Ross needed just one play to erase the deficit, though,
and then added 10 more points in the final six minutes of the
half.
The Lobos then scored on four straight possessions to start the
third quarter, pulling ahead 45-21 before Trinity was able to get
on the board in the second half. After the Tigers made it
45-28, Sul Ross added another score to reach 50 points before the
final quarter had even started.
The two teams traded scoring drives early in the fourth quarter,
then Sul Ross put the finishing touches on the game with a
touchdown in the final minutes.
Trinity's defense yielded 655 yards of offense in the game,
while the offense piled up more than 500 yards themselves.
The Tigers did commit three costly turnovers, though, which
led to a pair of third-quarter touchdowns for Sul Ross.
Running back Patrick Granchelli rushed 18 times for 126 yards
and two touchdowns in the game, while quarterback Mason Blaschke
had 54 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown. Granchelli also
caught a touchdown pass on Trinity's first drive of the game.
Nyk McKissic completed 13-20 through the air for 230 yards, but
failed to find the end zone for the first time this season.
Blaschke started the game for the Tigers, going 11-17 for 127
yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Mason Lytal led Trinity with seven receptions for 110 yards, and
scored for the third straight game. Matthew Kennemer had
eight catches for 86 yards, while Hagen Kattner caught two passes
for 64 total yards.
For Sul Ross, A.J. Springer led the game with 481 yards and six
touchdowns through the air, completing 32-41 passes. Cordrick
Mobley was his favorite target, picking up seven receptions for 148
yards and two scores. Three Sul Ross players had over 100
yards receiving, while one had 100 yards rushing and receiving.
Dominique Carson finished with 128 yards and one touchdown on
the ground, as well as 119 yards and two more scores receiving.
Nick Darling led Trinity's defense with 10 tackles in the game,
while Leroy Mitchell added seven stops for the Tigers. Tomy
Boboy had five tackles overall, as well as recording a sack for the
second straight game.
Trinity returns home next weekend, facing off against
fourth-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6:00 p.m.
