Trinity Football Edged on Late Field Goal by Millsaps

San Antonio - The Tiger football team were edged 27-24 by Millsaps College on Saturday, as the Majors kicked a 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to secure the win.

Trinity dropped to 3-3 on the season, and lost for the first time in the last three meetings with Millsaps.  The Majors remained undefeated at 5-0, and now lead the series 20-17 between the former conference rivals.

Millsaps kicker Beau Brady booted his second field goal of the game to seal the victory.  Tiger kicker Matthew Kennemer had his field goal attempt from the Millsaps 22 yard line blocked by the Majors, which led to the winning drive.  Millsaps advanced the ball to the Trinity 16, setting up the winning play. The Tigers lit up the board first as Weslyn Wagner snagged a 9-yard TD pass from Stephen Smith, early in the opening period. Millsaps evened it up as Zander Romano caught a 26-yarder from Zak Thrasher at 10:11 in the first quarter. Mike Barthelemy gave Millsaps a 14-7 lead on a short run shortly into the second quarter.

Kennemer hit a 21-yard field goal to make it 14-10 midway through the second, then the Tigers took the lead on an 80-yard bomb from quarterback Stephen Smith to tight end Sam Harford.

Harford and Smith connected on another scoring play, a 24-yard TD pass, as the Tigers extended their lead to 24-17 early in the third period. Mike Barthelemy evened the game 24-24 for the Majors with a 49-yard touchdown run with 9:25 left on the clock.

Smith completed 13-26 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns.  Harford caught three passes for 134 yards and a pair of scores. Desmond King led the Tigers ground game with 10 attempts for 65 yards. Kennemer chalked up 104 all-purpose yards, tying Canaan Factor (1996-1999) for a spot in the top-15 in all-purpose yards for a career.

Trinity's Connor Yorloff was the game's leader in tackles, with 13, while J.P. Sanchez accounted for 12 total tackles and one pass breakup. Bradley Drenon chalked up three QB hurries, and Camden Joubert intercepted a Millsaps pass.

Trinity travels to Georgetown, Texas, next Saturday for a game with Southwestern at 1 p.m. The game will not count in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. Trinity and Southwestern will play an SCAC game on Nov. 9, as the Tigers wrap up their regular-season home schedule.
