Box Score Georgetown, Texas – The last time the Trinity Tigers and Southwestern Pirates met in a football game was in 1941, five weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Southwestern won that game, played in San Antonio, by a score of 13-6.
But on Saturday at Birkelbach Field, the Tigers shut out the Pirates 30-0. Trinity evened the all-time series with Southwestern, which reinstituted football this season. It marked the Tigers first shutout victory of the 2013 campaign.
The Tigers upped their record to 4-3 on the season, while the Pirates remained winless at 0-7. The two teams are members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, but the game on Nov. 9 at Trinity will count in the SCAC standings.
Trinity kicker
Kevin Wise booted three field goals, the most by a Trinity player this season. The first was a 22-yarder, with 3:40 remaining in the opening period. The Tigers scored 21 points in the second quarter, starting with a 43-yard touchdown pass from
Stephen Smith to
Matthew Kennemer. With less than six minutes left in the half, Kennemer snagged a 20-yard TD pass from Smith, as Wise connected on both extra-point attempts.
Austin Lee recovered a Southwestern fumble and returned the ball 85 yards for a touchdown, with eight seconds on the first-half clock. Wise's kick was good, and Trinity led 24-0 at halftime.
In the second half, it was all Wise's show, as he kicked 22-yard field goals in each of the final two periods. He did not miss an attempt in the game.
Smith completed 18-32 passes (one interception) for 262 yards and two touchdowns. It marked a team season-high in single-game completions.
Garrett Swan connected on 6-8 passes for 54 yards.
Kennemer made seven receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, Kennemer had six punt returns for 61 yards, and rushed for nine yards.
Francisco Ashford registered five punts for 217 yards, with the longest tallied at 54 yards.
Desmond King led Trinity rushers with 64 yards on 11 attempts.
Defensively,
J.P. Sanchez and
Tomy Boboy each chalked up seven tackles. Sanchez, with two solo tackles, also made a QB hurry. Boboy, who had 3 unassisted tackles, accounted for one sack, and 3.5 tackles for a loss of 10 yards.
James Hix made six tackles (four solo), 1.5 tackles for a loss, and one QB hurry.
Southwestern quarterbacks Dante Smith and Tate Taylor were each intercepted one time. The two interceptions were courtesy of
Camden Joubert and
Caleb Green.
Smith completed 11-25 passes for 81 yards, while Taylor's only attempt resulted in the interception. Taylor led all rushers with 126 yards on 23 carries.
Trinity chalked up 316 yards in the air, and 120 on the ground for 436 total yards. Southwestern had 81 yards passing and 112 rushing for 193 yards, the lowest yardage by a Tiger opponent this season.
The Tigers travel to Cleveland, Ohio, next Saturday for a noon Eastern Time game (11:00 a.m. Central) with Case Western Reserve.
