Trinity Football Beaten by Second-Ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor

Box Score

Belton, Texas - The Tiger football team had its two-game winning streak snapped in a 49-7 road loss to the second-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday night.

Trinity dropped to 3-2 on the season, while UMHB remained unbeaten at 5-0 on the year.

The game got off to a rought start, as the Crusaders took the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.  Trinity's defense didn't allow a score in the opening quarter, though, holding UMHB to three three-and-outs to start the game.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed just two drives of more than 50 yards, and four of the Crusader scoring drives started in Trinity territory.  The biggest advantage of the game came on special teams, which featured not only the kick return for a touchdown by UMHB, but also saw the Tigers average just 25.0 yards per punt on 10 punts in the game.

Mary Hardin-Baylor scored its second touchdown early in the second quarter, and wound up with a 28-7 halftime lead.  The Tigers scored their only points of the game to make it 14-7, but couldn't put together enough offense to keep pace with the home team.

Trinity was held to a total of -5 yards rushing, though 26 negative yards came via four sacks by the UMHB defense.  Quarterback Stephen Smith completed 10-19 through the air for 161 yards, and threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Cody Sandman in the second quarter.

Sandman finished the game with four receptions for 99 yards to lead all receivers, scoring a touchdown for the fourth time in five games.

Tomy Boboy and Jamal Murray both reached double figures in tackles to lead the Tiger defense.  Boboy finished with 11 tackles overall, including four tackles for loss and a sack.  Murray had 10 stops, and both players recorded seven solo efforts.

The Mary Hardin-Baylor rushing game piled up 327 yards, and the offense finished with 432 total yards in the game.  Trinity was held to just 204 yards of total offense.

Trinity returns home next weekend, facing off against former conference rival Millsaps College at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.  The Tigers will then play a tough stretch of the schedule, with three of the final four games on the road.
