Trinity Finishes Season Sweep of Southwestern With 58-20 Win

Box Score

San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers football team finished off its home schedule with a 58-20 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Southwestern Pirates on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity, which shut out Southwestern 30-0 on Oct. 19 in Georgetown, Texas, improved to 5-4 and 1-1 SCAC, while scoring a season-high in points. Southwestern dropped to 0-9 and 0-3 SCAC. Saturday's game counted in the conference standings.

Running back Desmond King rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and became the 22nd player in Trinity history to reach the 1,000-yards career milestone.

Trinity opened the scoring with a short run early in the first quarter, but Southwestern battled back to tie the game 6-6 less than two minutes later.  Both teams missed their extra-point attempts.

Southwestern then took a 13-6 lead early in the second quarter with a short touchdown, but King scored his first of two touchdowns to tie the game 13-13, and then Tiger quarterback Stephen Smith gave his team the lead with a seven-yard scoring pass to Weslyn Wagner with under a minute left until halftime.

The Tigers outscored the Pirates 38-7 in the second half, beginning with a 22-yard pass from Smith to Cody Sandman with 7:08 remaining in the third period. Southwestern's Colten Shea closed the gap by catching a 9-yard touchdown pass from Hicks, though it would turn out to be the last scoring play of the game for the Pirates.

King finished the third quarter with his second score from three yards out to put Trinity up 34-20, then Sandman caught his second TD pass of the day just as the fourth quarter got underway.  This score came on a 57-yard catch-and-run.

Kevin Wise knocked in a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth as well, and after missing his first PAT, he connected on seven straight tries to end the game.

Linebacker Julian Turner recovered a fumble and returned it 18 yards for a TU touchdown. Turner made two second-half fumble recoveries in the game. The final score of the game came as backup quarterback Kenneth Brewer tossed a 33-yarder to Hagen Kattner at the 2:12 mark.

Smith completed 20-29 passes (two interceptions) for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Sandman posted four receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Connor Yorloff led the team with 10 tackles (three solo), one sack for 11 yards, one tackle for a loss, a forced fumble, and a QB hurry. James Hix made nine tackles (four solo), and forced a fumble. Camden Joubert had eight tackles (three solo) and a pass breakup. Wyatt Tiffany recorded two sacks for 15 yards, while Tomy Boboy posted three quarterback hurries. Tyler Hatton was responsible for the interception of the Southwestern quarterback.

The Tigers racked up 245 yards rushing and 293 passing, for 538 total yards. Southwestern was limited to 64 yards on the ground, and 227 in the air, for 291 total yards.

Trinity wraps up its season next Saturday in Sherman, Texas, with an SCAC tilt against Austin College at 1:00 p.m.
