Box Score San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers football
team finished off its home schedule with a 58-20 Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Southwestern
Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity, which shut out Southwestern 30-0 on Oct. 19 in
Georgetown, Texas, improved to 5-4 and 1-1 SCAC, while scoring a
season-high in points. Southwestern dropped to 0-9 and 0-3 SCAC.
Saturday's game counted in the conference standings.
Running back Desmond King rushed for 121 yards and two
touchdowns, and became the 22nd player in Trinity history to
reach the 1,000-yards career milestone.
Trinity opened the scoring with a short run early in the first
quarter, but Southwestern battled back to tie the game 6-6 less
than two minutes later. Both teams missed their extra-point
attempts.
Southwestern then took a 13-6 lead early in the second quarter
with a short touchdown, but King scored his first of two touchdowns
to tie the game 13-13, and then Tiger quarterback Stephen Smith
gave his team the lead with a seven-yard scoring pass to Weslyn
Wagner with under a minute left until halftime.
The Tigers outscored the Pirates 38-7 in the second half,
beginning with a 22-yard pass from Smith to Cody Sandman with 7:08
remaining in the third period. Southwestern's Colten Shea
closed the gap by catching a 9-yard touchdown pass from Hicks,
though it would turn out to be the last scoring play of the game
for the Pirates.
King finished the third quarter with his second score from three
yards out to put Trinity up 34-20, then Sandman caught his second
TD pass of the day just as the fourth quarter got underway.
This score came on a 57-yard catch-and-run.
Kevin Wise knocked in a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth
as well, and after missing his first PAT, he connected on seven
straight tries to end the game.
Linebacker Julian Turner recovered a fumble and returned it 18
yards for a TU touchdown. Turner made two second-half fumble
recoveries in the game. The final score of the game came as backup
quarterback Kenneth Brewer tossed a 33-yarder to Hagen Kattner at
the 2:12 mark.
Smith completed 20-29 passes (two interceptions) for 260 yards
and three touchdowns. Sandman posted four receptions for 140 yards
and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Connor Yorloff led the team with 10 tackles (three
solo), one sack for 11 yards, one tackle for a loss, a forced
fumble, and a QB hurry. James Hix made nine tackles (four solo),
and forced a fumble. Camden Joubert had eight tackles (three solo)
and a pass breakup. Wyatt Tiffany recorded two sacks for 15 yards,
while Tomy Boboy posted three quarterback hurries. Tyler Hatton was
responsible for the interception of the Southwestern
quarterback.
The Tigers racked up 245 yards rushing and 293 passing, for 538
total yards. Southwestern was limited to 64 yards on the ground,
and 227 in the air, for 291 total yards.
Trinity wraps up its season next Saturday in Sherman, Texas,
with an SCAC tilt against Austin College at 1:00 p.m.
