Tiger Basketball Teams Begin NCAA Playoffs This Weekend

San Antonio - After winning the 2013 SCAC Championships, the Trinity Tiger men's and women's basketball teams will open up play at the NCAA Playoffs this weekend.

The Tiger men will host Concordia (TX) University on Saturday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m.  The winner will advance to take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor the following weekend in Belton, Texas.  

Trinity's women's team will travel to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.  The Tigers open up against hosting Lewis & Clark at 7:30 p.m. (PST) on Friday, March 1.  The winner will the winner of Whitman College and Cal Lutheran University, who face off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.  The winning teams play on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (PST).  

This past weekend, both Tiger teams won the SCAC Tournament after earning the top seeds heading into the six-team event.  The teams both earned byes, then won two games to claim the 2013 SCAC Championships.

Trinity's women defeated the University of Dallas 59-53 to open its tournament weekend, then secured its first SCAC title since 2005 with a 77-65 win over Southwestern University on Sunday afternoon.  It marked the fourth SCAC Championship in Tiger women's basketball history.

The SCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player was Libby Kruse, and Tiger teammates Anecia Richardson and Hannah Coley also earned All-Tournament honors.

The men's team battled to a 69-61 win over Southwestern University in its opening game, then survived a 60-55 overtime thriller against Colorado College to win its second consecutive championship.  The conference title was the seventh in school history for the Tiger men's team.

Heath Hopson was named the SCAC Tournament MVP, and was joined by teammate Robert Kitzinger on the All-Tournament team.

Trinity's men are competing in their ninth overall NCAA Playoffs, while the women are in the national tournament for the fifth time.  The Tiger men reached the Sectional Finals (Elite Eight) in 2005, while the 2002-03 Trinity women's team won the NCAA Division III National Championship.
