San Antonio
- Trinity first-year defender Kellen Reid and
senior goalkeeper Matt Cardone have been named the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive and
Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Both players had major roles in Trinity's three
SCAC home shutout victories last week. Trinity edged Texas Lutheran
University 1-0 on September 29, defeated Centenary College
5-0 last Friday, and then outfought No. 16 Colorado College 1-0 in
Sunday's finale. Trinity (11-1-0, 7-0-0 SCAC) took over sole
possession of first place in the conference.
Reid scored the only goal in the matchup with
Colorado College, breaking a scoreless tie in the 57th minute. It
marked Reid's first goal in his early collegiate career. He
also became the ninth different Tiger player this season to produce
a game-winning goal.
Cardone posted four saves in the win over Texas
Lutheran, and tallied one against Centenary, in just under 75
minutes of net time. But Cardone had an exemplary six-save
performance in the tight game with Colorado College, which tied his
season-high mark. Cardone chalked up his third solo shutout of the
campaign, as the Tiger team came up with its fourth consecutive
clean-sheet game.
This season, Cardone has recorded 35 saves in 12
games, yielding only eight goals in more than 900 minutes of
playing time. He holds a goals-against average of 0.79 per game
this year.
The defending SCAC champion Tigers will get a
rematch with Centenary and Colorado College on the road next
weekend. Trinity takes on Centenary Friday at Shreveport,
Louisiana; and Colorado College Sunday at Colorado Springs,
Colorado.
Following two other road games, the Tigers
return home Friday, October 24, to host Austin College in an SCAC
contest.
