Trinity Opens SCAC Play With Tough Road Loss at Texas Lutheran

Box Score

Seguin, Texas - Trinity's football team opened up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 34-27 defeat at Texas Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers led 7-3 early in the game, but the Bulldogs scored two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 17-7 advantage into halftime.  Trinity opened the scoring on a reverse pass early in the third quarter to cut the lead to just three points, but Texas Lutheran answered with consecutive scores to pull back in front 31-14.

Trinity continued to fight until the end, though, scoring twice in the fourth quarter, but Texas Lutheran was able to stop the rally short in the end.  After the Tigers scored with 2:53 remaining to make it 34-27, Texas Lutheran recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the game.

Matthew Kennemer threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Mason Blaschke, totaling 77 yards on two pass plays.  He also completed a pass on a fake punt in the first quarter, leading to Trinity's opening touchdown.

Blaschke finished with 109 yards rushing to lead the Tigers, adding another score on the ground.  He struggled in the passing game, though, completing just 7-22 for 77 yards and two interceptions.  He also hit Jayden Holden for an 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, accounting for three total scores on the day.

Travis Williams also had a nice day in his return to the starting lineup, picking up 78 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.  Chaz Davis caught three passes for 41 yards.

Connor Yorloff led Trinity with 12 tackles and the team's only sack - a five-yard loss.  Brad Hood and Julian Turner added nine stops each, while Camden Joubert finished with eight.  Joshua Cook picked off a pass for the only turnover of the game for Texas Lutheran.

Trinity committed three turnovers on the day, giving up a fumble in addition to the two interceptions.  The Tigers finished with 358 yards offensively, but allowed nearly 500 to the Bulldogs offense.

The Tigers fall to 2-6 on the season, falling to the Bulldogs for the second consecutive year.  Trinity falls to 16-11 in the series, though Texas Lutheran has won three of the last five meetings.  Texas Lutheran improves to 7-1 on the season.

Trinity will be back in action next weekend, facing off against Southwestern University in another conference matchup.  The Tigers defeated the Pirates 22-19 in a non-conference tilt on October 18 in San Antonio.
