Box Score Richardson, Texas - The second-ranked
Tiger men's soccer team defeated the University of
Texas-Dallas 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III
Playoffs on Sunday evening.
First-year player Kellen Reid produced the only score
of the game, with a solo shot in the 23rd minute of play. Reid
scored his third goal of the season, and second game-winner,
putting the ball in the net past the diving UT-Dallas
goalkeeper.
Trinity (23-1-0) advanced to the NCAA round of
16. The Tigers will take on seventh-ranked Loras College late next
week at a site to be announced Monday. Last season, host Loras
ended Trinity's season in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win at
Dubuque, Iowa.
Sunday's win over UT-Dallas was especially
meaningful, since the Comets handed the Tigers their only loss of
the season. UT-Dallas beat Trinity 2-1 on September 6 at
Georgetown, Texas. Since that game, the Tigers have recorded 20
consecutive victories. Included in the run is a 2-1 win over
Hardin-Simmons University in the first round on Saturday. Senior
Victor Araujo scored the winning goal with just 21 seconds left on
the clock.
Tiger goalkeeper Matt Cardone was effective
during his full 90 minutes of play against UT-Dallas, as he posted
three saves. The game also marked Trinity's 14th shutout of
the year. UT-Dallas completed the season with a 14-5-3
record.
Trinity, led by Head Coach Paul McGinlay, is
competing in its 13th straight NCAA tournament.
