Box Score San Antonio - The second-ranked Tiger
men's soccer team scored two late goals to earn a 2-0 shutout
victory over the University of California-Santa Cruz on Sunday
night, finishing off the team's regular season schedule.
Trinity wraps up the regular season with a 19-1-0
overall record, winning its 16th consecutive game. The Tigers also
finished with an unblemished 11-0-0 mark on their home field.
Santa Cruz falls to 11-6-1 with the loss.
Victor Araujo notched the eventual game-winner
by successfully converting a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
Kellen Reid clinched the win by scoring a goal with just 45
seconds left on the clock, on an assist from Johnny Lawson. Those
proved to be the only shots on goal for Trinity.
Araujo scored his eighth goal of the season, and
third game-winner, while Lawson chalked up his eighth assist of the
campaign.
Goalkeeper Matt Cardone guarded the net for the
full 90 minutes of the game, which was physical and often
combative. Cardone accounted for three saves, as Trinity registered
its fourth straight shutout and 12th overall.
In addition to Araujo, Lawson, and Cardone, nine
other seniors were honored prior to the game: Claudio Calistri,
Roberto Camargo, Nico Estrada, Ben Kerley, Ryan Lord, Connor
McKeon, Omar Sanchez, Chris Schluter, and Siom Uribe.
Trinity earlier won the Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the top-seeded
slot in the SCAC Tournament. The Tigers received a bye into the
semifinals, which will be played at 11:00 a.m.Saturday at Texas
Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. The championship game is
slated for 1:00 p.m. Sunday, also at TLU. The winner will receive
an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
