Box Score Seguin, Texas - The second-ranked Trinity
men's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout victory over hosting Texas
Lutheran University at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Tigers advanced to the SCAC Tournament
Championship, held at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at Texas
Lutheran. Trinity improves to 15-0-0 against SCAC teams this
season, following the team's undefeated regular season mark
(14-0-0) in conference play.
The Tigers are 20-1-0 overall this year, while the No. 5 seed
Bulldogs fall to 9-9-2 on the season with the loss. Texas
Lutheran defeated fourth seed University of Dallas 2-0 yesterday to
advance to Saturday's semifinal.
After a scoreless first half, defensive midfielder Simon Uribe
broke the deadlock with his goal early in the second period.
Uribe's eventual game-winner was assisted by defender Tom
Carwile. The Tiger defensive duo combined with the rest of
the team defense to record the team's fifth consecutive clean
sheet, and the 13th shutout overall this season.
Later in the period, Derrick Horvath drew a foul in the TLU box
to set the Tigers up with a penalty kick. Johnny Lawson
converted to give Trinity a much-needed insurance goal.
Horvath later sealed the victory with a goal of his own.
Matt Cardone played just over 76 minutes in net for the Tigers,
combining with Chad Margotta to record the shutout. Trinity's
defense yielded just nine total shots, and only three on goal.
Cardone had two saves, while Margotta added another in the
final 14 minutes.
Trinity will face #2 seed Colorado College in tomorrow's final.
Colorado College defeated #3 seed Southwestern University 5-0
in today's second semifinal, after receiving a bye.
