Box Score Georgetown, Texas - Trinity's football
team finished off a regular season sweep of Southwestern University
with a 38-18 road victory on Saturday evening.
The Tigers improved to 3-6 overall with the team's highest
scoring output of the season. Trinity also defeated
Southwestern 22-19 in San Antonio on October 18.
Running back Jeremy Simmons had one of the best rushing
performances in Trinity football history, carrying the ball 24
times for 215 yards and a touchdown. His 215 yards rushing is
tied for the ninth-highest total in school history, and marks the
first 200-yard rushing game for a Tiger football player since
quarterback Mason Blaschke ran for 221 yards against Millsaps in
2012.
After scoring a touchdown in each of the first two quarters,
Trinity led 14-0 at halftime. Blaschke scored the game's
first points on a four-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive.
Simmons then got his only score of the day with a two-yard
plunge across the goal line.
Simmons actually set up the first score with a career-best
64-yard run on the second play of the drive, giving the Tigers a
first down at the Southwestern 13 yard line. He also keyed
the drive in which he scored with a 47-yard run on the first play
from scrimmage.
The third quarter was marred by a total of five turnovers for
the two teams. Blaschke had a rough quarter with three
interceptions, though Trinity's defense forced a fumble and an
interception of its own in the third. The Tiger defense
picked up four total turnovers in the game, forcing two more
fumbles outside of the quarter.
Southwestern struck first in the third quarter with a drive that
was aided by 29 yards worth of penalties. The Pirates
finished off the drive, but missed the extra point to make it 14-6.
Trinity answered in style, though, as Desmond King took the
ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, swinging momentum back in
Trinity's favor. It was the first kickoff return for a
touchdown since Caleb Urban's special teams score against Colorado
College in 2008.
Southwestern's second turnover of the quarter set the Tigers up
for a short drive that was capped by a Blaschke touchdown to
Matthew Kennmer that made it 28-6 with 6:08 to go in the third.
The Pirates answered this time with their own score, but the
PAT was blocked to keep it 28-12 heading into the final
quarter.
Trinity scored the first 10 points of the quarter on its first
two drives, as Payton Kisor connected on a 39-yard field goal, and
Chaz Davis caught a short pass from backup QB Robert Broyles to
push the lead to 38-12 with less than 10 minutes to play.
Southwestern had just three more offensive possessions in the
game, finally scoring as time expired to reach the final score.
Jayden Holden led Trinity with three catches for 72 yards, while
LeAndrew Gordon's only reception went for 35 yards.
Jai Boatman led Trinity's defense with eight total tackles,
while Joshua Cook and Julian Turner finished with six stops each.
Turner also had 2.0 tackles for loss in the game.
Alejandro Anzaldua had five total tackles, 3.5 of which went
for loss, and a sack.
Trinity returns home for its final regular season game of the
year on Saturday, November 15. The Tigers will host Austin
College in their final SCAC game of the season at 1:00 p.m.
