women's golf team is now the champion of the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference!
Trinity, ranked 13th nationally, shot a
final-round 323 Tuesday at the Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort
& Spa Golf Course to win the title by one stroke over No. 17
Southwestern University. It marked the first women's golf
SCAC Championship for the Tigers since 1995. Trinity had finished
as conference runner-up on five occasions, including the 2013
season.
Led by Head Coach/Director of Golf Carla
Spenkoch, Trinity completed the two-round event with a 646 total.
Southwestern came in at 647, 23rd-ranked Schreiner University
recorded a 663, No. 39 Centenary College posted 687, and Texas
Lutheran University carded 755.
The Tigers made up a five-stroke difference from
Monday's opening round, trailing Southwestern, which won last
year's championship at Shreveport, Louisiana.
Trinity sophomore Brigette Lee shot an
eight-over 80 to finish the individual tournament with a 159,
earning a third-place finish. Lee was the 2013 winner, and was also
named last year's SCAC Women's Golf Player of the Year,
and the SCAC Freshman of the Year.
First-year golfers Hanna Niner and Christine
Campbell finished in a three-way tie for fourth place, with 162s.
Niner posted seven-over 79, and Campbell went 11-over 83 on
Tuesday. Lee, Niner, and Campbell qualified for the All-SCAC First
Team.
Niner was named the SCAC Women's Golf Freshman of the Year as the
top individual finisher among first-year players.
Sophomore Madeline Moran tied for seventh place
and earned a position on the All-SCAC Second Team. Moran shot
nine-over 81 for a 163 total. Junior Alessa Hutter improved her
score by seven strokes and completed the final round at 14-over 86.
Hutter, who came in at 179, stood alone in 17th place.
Trinity will wait for a possible bid to the NCAA
Division III Championships, to be held May 13-16 at Howey-in-the
Hills, Florida.
