Box Score Alpine, Texas - Trinity's football team
earned its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon,
overcoming a 90-minute weather delay to beat Sul Ross State
University 14-6.
The Tigers improved to 1-2 on the year, and Head Coach Jerheme
Urban nabs his first victory after taking over the reigns of the
program following last season.
Trinity scored both of its touchdowns in the second quarter,
taking a 14-0 lead into halftime. During halftime, the
weather rolled in, causing an extended delay due to lightning in
the area.
Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter, but early
in the fourth, Sul Ross struck after forcing its second turnover of
the game. The Lobos took advantage of the short field,
breaking onto the scoreboard with a 26-yard drive.
The extra point was missed, but Trinity was called for a
personal foul - roughing the kicker - that gave Sul Ross another
shot. The Lobos then decided to go for two, but the Tiger
defense held, keeping the score 14-6 with 8:14 remaining.
Trinity drove past midfield on its next drive, to eat up
precious time on the clock, but the Sul Ross defense stiffened and
forced a punt. After a first down early in the ensuing Sul
Ross drive, the Tiger defense held firm, forcing the Lobos into a
third-and-long situation. An incomplete pass and an offensive
penalty, set up a last gasp fourth down try, but Trinity's defense
held again to seal the win.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Trinity finally got on the
board with a 69-yard drive that was capped by a two-yard run by
Travis Williams. Williams finished the day with 96 yards on
22 carries to lead the Tiger running attack. Quarterback
Mason Blaschke also ran 16 times for 91 yards, as well as
completing 9-20 for 93 yards through the air.
Trinity's second touchdown of the quarter came on defense, as
Jai Boatman recorded his third interception of the season.
Boatman returned the pick 54 yards for the score, which was
the first interception return touchdown for the Tigers since
Von'Darrick Jones returned one for a score last year against Sul
Ross.
The Tiger defense was the star of the game once again, allowing
just 165 yards of total offense - including a paltry 34 yards
passing. Connor Yorloff picked up a game-high 13 tackles (1.5
tackles for loss), while Julian Turner had nine total stops - two
of which were for losses. Alejandro Anzaldua nabbed five
total tackles, which included three tackles for loss.
Trinity returns home for the first time since the season opener
next weekend, hosting #17 Pacific Lutheran University. The
two teams last met when the Lutes defeated the Tigers in the 1999
NCAA Semifinals.
