Box Score San Antonio - Trinity's fourth-ranked
men's soccer team earned a 7-0 shutout victory to open up a
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend at home against
Schreiner University on Friday evening.
The Tigers improve to 8-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in conference play
this season, and are tied atop the SCAC standings with Colorado
College.
Trinity jumped out to a quick lead, as Johnny Lawson converted a
penalty kick in the third minute for the eventual game-winner.
Brent Mandelkorn added two more goals in the first half,
scoring in the 11th and 16th minutes of play. Lawson also
picked up an assist on the first of those two goals, then also
picked up another helper in the second half.
Callum Squires knocked in a goal just seconds after entering the
game, as Victor Araujo picked up an assist that made it 4-0 in
favor of the Tigers by halftime.
In the second half, Araujo scored a pair of goals in less than
four minutes of game time to push the lead to 6-0, and Nate Dauphin
capped the scoring with a long-range shot in the final minute.
Jorge Villamarin assisted on Dauphin's final score.
Matt Cardone, Chad Margotta, and Todd Whittaker combined for the
shutout in goal for Trinity. Cardone was in net for the first
half, and the Tigers didn't allow a single shot in the period.
Overall, Trinity out-shot Schreiner 32-1. Margotta and
Whittaker split the goalkeeper duties in the second half.
Trinity resumes its weekend of play with a game against Texas
Lutheran University on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
