Lynchburg, Virginia - The No. 5 Trinity women's soccer team defeated the defending national champion and top-ranked Lynchburg College 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
In a highly defensive battle, Colleen Markey put the Tigers on the board in the 56th minute of play, on an assist from Brigitte Taylor. Markey, who scored her first goal of the campaign, pounded the ball into the undefended Lynchburg net, as Taylor picked up her second assist of the season.
Jane Thompson accounted for three saves in the matchup. Trinity outshot Lynchburg 12-9, and led 6-3 in shots on the mark.
Trinity improved its record to 5-0-1, while Lynchburg dropped to 6-1-0. It was the first loss for Lynchburg in over 22 months, as the Hornets last came up short in the 2013 NCAA Division III second round.
Up next for Trinity will be a home game Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
