Box Score San Antonio - Trinity's Rebecca Hayes and Kirby Smith have been tabbed as the respective Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week.
The two Tigers turned in excellent performances last week as Trinity went 3-0 at the SCAC Divisional in Georgetown, Texas. Trinity defeated the third-ranked host Southwestern University 3-2, and shut out Schreiner (TX) University and Texas Lutheran University by scores of 3-0.
Smith received the conference honor for the third consecutive week. The junior outside hitter led the Tigers in kills each match, averaging 4.0 per set. Smith also hit an impressive .349 over the three matches. She produced a pair of double-doubles, and has nine on the season. Smith finished two of the matches without committing an error, and hit .593 in the Texas Lutheran match.
Additionally, Smith averaged 3.91 digs per set for the weekend, finishing second on the Tiger team. She had an especially superb match against Southwestern, leading the Tigers with a season-best 21 kills and 24 digs. This season, Smith leads the team with 281 kills (3.60 per set), and is second in digs with 221 (2.83 per set).
Hayes, a junior middle blocker, paced the Tigers in blocks over the weekend, averaging 1.2 per set. She recorded a season-best nine blocks in the Southwestern match. Hayes and her teammates held Southwestern to a hitting percentage of .089.
Contributing to the offensive side, Hayes hit .364 over the trio of matches, averaging 2.3 kills per set. She also chalked up hitting percentages above .550 in two of the match-ups. Hayes did not make an error in those pairings, and hit .667 against Schreiner, and .563 in the finale with Texas Lutheran. For the campaign, Hayes leads the team with 56 blocks. She has accounted for 135 kills, and is hitting .358.
The Tigers, who have won four matches in a row, stand at 17-5 on the season. Trinity is tied with Southwestern for the conference lead, with a 9-1 mark.
Trinity returns to action Tuesday, October 18, by hosting St. Mary's (TX) University at 6:00 p.m. The Rattlers, who hail from San Antonio, are members of the NCAA Division II.
