Volleyball's Kirby Smith Earns National Player of the Week Honors

San Antonio - Trinity junior outside hitter Kirby Smith has been named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Player of the Week.

Smith became the second player in Trinity's program history to receive the national accolade. Shawn McLaughlin was selected as the AVCA Player of the Week in November 2003.

Earlier this week, Smith was tabbed as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.  She is the third player in SCAC history to win the award for three consecutive weeks, and the first since 2013.

Smith and her teammates produced a 3-0 record at last week's SCAC Divisional in Georgetown, Texas. Trinity, now ranked 20th in the AVCA Division III Poll, defeated host Southwestern University 3-2. The Pirates were ranked third nationally at the time, and now hold a #4 ranking. The Tigers shut out Schreiner (TX) University and Texas Lutheran University by scores of 3-0.

Smith recorded two double-doubles over the three matches, and has nine total in her column. In the upset decision over Southwestern, Smith posted a season-best 21 kills and 24 digs. Her .263 hitting average was nearly .100 points higher than the team's average. Smith finished the tournament by hitting .593 against Texas Lutheran, and recorded 16 kills and 11 digs.

Over the three matches, Smith hit .349, and finished two of the match-ups without committing an error. She paced the Tigers team in kills, averaging 4.0 per set. Smith also averaged 3.91 digs per set, finishing second on the team.

This season, Smith leads the Tigers with 281 kills (3.60 per set), and is second in digs with 221 (2.83 per set). Smith currently has a hitting percentage of .293.

The Tigers have won four consecutive matches, and stand at 17-5 on the season. Trinity is tied with Southwestern for the conference lead, with a 9-1 record.

Trinity returns to the court Tuesday, October 18, by hosting St. Mary's (TX) University at 6:00 p.m. St. Mary's is a member of the NCAA Division II.
